Spain

Famous for the sun, sea, beaches and tapas. But surely as popular for it's culture, history and beautiful countryside...

An unique destination, due to its rich history and cultural heritage, diverse landscape and varied gastronomy. Here you will find green, hilly country side with pastures and small fishing harbours to the mountains with permanent snow, like the Sierra Nevada or the Pyrenees. From the steep rocky coast to the busy beaches of the Costa's, from the worldly towns to the small middle ages villages inland.

The diversity and the contrasts which characterize Spain can also been seen in the culture. The country is strewn with interesting cultural sights, each with it's own influences: Celtic, Iberian, Greek-Roman, Moors.

The Spanish people enjoy a lively culture, with it's many folk festivals and in the music and dance (think of the 'Flamenco' in Andalusia or the somewhat gentler Sardana in Cataluña), each region with it's own festivals and customs. On top of which Spain has excellent cuisine: olives & olive oil, tapas, fish and shell fish paella, wine, sherry and above all a many sided local gastronomy.

Costa de la Luz

In the western part of the Costa del Sol you will find Costa de la Luz (coast of the light), between the towns of Huelva en Cádiz. Its 250km long coast consists of an extensive series of long golden sandy beaches and it has interesting fishing villages. Some of the better known tourist resorts along this coast include Tarifa, Conil de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa María, Rota, Chipiona, Punta Umbría, and Mazagón.

This region has a lot of natural scenery to offer – the region of Costa de la Luz boasts a large number of natural parks and nature reserves, including Sierra de Grazamela and Acantilado y Pinar de Barbate, as well as the very special natural park of Doñana.

If you wish to explore the interior, then you could set off on a tour by car further inland along the “white villages”. This route runs from Ronda to Arcos de la Frontera and will lead you along the dazzling white villages. You could also visit a number of caves further inland, such as the stalactite and stalagmite cave of Las Maravillas in Aracena, and the cave of El Tajo de las Figuras (near Benalup) with its Neolithic paintings. Near Aracena is Almonaster. Here, you will find a mosque, older than that of Córdoba, as well as an Arabian castle.

This region also has the ‘route of inns', around Vejer de la Frontera, leading along gastronomic inns.

As befits a southern Spanish region, the Costa de la Luz also has a number of festivals dedicated to music, wine, bulls, or horses. The most famous ones are the Carnaval of Cádiz, the horse market of Jerez, and the Semana Santa in Arcos de la Frontera.
